Abstract
The observed properties of the arclike images discovered by Lynds and Petrosian in clusters of galaxies are summarized. It is shown that these observations can best be described by gravitational lensing of a distant and somewhat unusual galaxy, by the mass distribution in the clusters. It is further shown how the modeling of the phenomenon can be used to determine the distribution of visible and dark matter in the clusters and to obtain the characteristics of the distant sources.
