Abstract

Aerosols in a clean air region (remonte station Zugspitze, Germany) were sampled at a mountain observatory higher than 2900 m a.s.1 in June 1984.

The filter samples were evaluated by an analytic transmission electron microscopic (ATEM) procedure to determine the content of fibrous particulates.

The measurements showed that asbestos fibers as well as other mineral fibers were present in the air of higher tropospheric elevations (over 2900 m). The measured concentrations for asbestos were between 0.2 to 2.103 fibers/m3 and were between 0.7 an 1.7 104 fibers/m3 for all mineral fibers. The majority of the mineral fibers (incl. asbestos) were shorter than 0.1 μm.
