Abstract

Supporting image-retrieval dialogues between naive users and information systems is a non-trivial task. Although a wide variety of experimental and prototypical image retrieval engines is available, most of them lack appropriate support for end-user oriented front ends. We have decided to illustrate the possible advantages of a tight coupling between interactive 3D information visualization systems and image retrieval systems based on database management systems by deriving requirements from a characteristic application scenario. By means of an “interactive 3D gallery” scenario, the paper provides an overview of the requirements, components, and architecture of a general database-driven 3D information visualization system on the basis of an RDBMS and VRML. The given approach supports loading time as well as runtime database access in various forms. It reflects the overall conceptual framework of our activities in this highly dynamic area of research and forms a basis for many other applications where information objects have to be visualized for interacting users or user groups.
