Abstract
Downsizing the corporation’s computer systems is still an important practice of many organizations. The feasibility of downsizing and breakthroughs in computer technology reinforce this concept, and cause corporations to downsize for cost reduction and to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of business operations. The problems of many processes and related complex factors need to be considered. The product of this research, “A Rule-Based System for Downsizing the Corporation’s Computer Systems (DOWNSIZINGX),” is a tool that uses a model of a knowledge base that provides a visual programming or window interface with an expert system shell. The system provides recommendations to support the decision-making of downsizing the computer systems. It uses CLIPS as an expert system shell and makes inferences about knowledge by using the forward chaining and the depth first strategy as a conflict resolution technique. A user interacts with the system through Visual Basic Interface connected to CLIPS via CLIPS OCX. The explanation facility allows the user to trace back the recommendations to find what factors were involved and to assist effective decision-making with reduced risks. The prototype was developed corresponding to the model and tested on some business decision scenarios and case studies. The results show that the system performs all functions correctly and also recommends situations effectively. Moreover, the system demonstrates the flexibility of the implementation of the user interface through Visual Basic programming tool which will enable and enhance more friendly interface for the users.
