Abstract
In this book we will be concerned with the properties of particles moving in confined regions. For example, there has been much research recently on the motion of electrons in quantum heterostructures (a heterostructure refers to a semiconductor composed of a series of different materials). For the systems discussed in this book, the motion of electrons in one dimension is restricted. Frequently the electron motion in one dimension can be confined to a single quantum state, so that the electron behavior in this direction is well understood. In this and similar cases the motion of the particles is well approximated as a quasi-low-dimensional system.
