Abstract

Internet telephony or VoIP, in recent years, has been deemed a very important application on the Internet. A significant number of architectures are proposed to provide telephony services over packet-based networks. Among others, ITU-T Rec. H.323 is the primary standard for the Internet telephony. While the H.323 is continuously revised, there are, however, still many important issues needed to be further discussed. Among others, the call routing method among gatekeepers has not yet been well designed in the H.323, and the primitive method in the current version may cause the loads of the gatekeepers unbalanced. To resolve this problem, we devise in this paper an enhanced call routing method to deal with the load balancing problem among the gatekeepers. This method for load balancing is based on “Multiple-Registration with Multicasted LRQ”. The simulation results show that the Call Blocking Rate and Channel Utilization are significantly improved by the proposed load-balancing method.
