Abstract
This paper presents a comprehensive review of linear and nonlinear dispersive Alfvén waves in a magnetized plasma. For illustrative purposes, we start with small amplitude Alfvén waves and their relation with other low-frequency plasma modes in a uniform plasma. We then show that dispersive Alfvén waves can be excited either by electron beams or by high-frequency external pump waves. Finite amplitude dispersive Alfvén waves interact with the background plasma as well as with themselves, giving rise to a number of interesting nonlinear phenomena, which are described here. The nonlinear eects produced by dispersive Alfvén waves include three-wave decay interactions, wave-amplitude modulations and wave-lamentation, density prole modication, as well as self-organization in the form of vortical structures, and routes to chaos. The nonlinear effects, as discussed here, can be of relevance to the generation of low-frequency turbulence and the modication of the background plasma density in the Earth’s ionosphere and magnetosphere, as well as to the large amplitude coherent nonlinear structures which are frequently observed in auroral plasmas.
