Abstract

Lipases from Rhizomucor miehei and Candida antarctica have been immobilized in lecithin microemulsion based gels formed with agar and hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose. It was found that both lipases keep its catalytic function after its entrapment in the gels, catalyzing the esterification reaction of 1-propanol with fatty acids in non-polar hydrocarbons at room temperature. Various parameters, which affect the lipase catalytic behavior such as the nature and the concentration of gelling agent, as well as the concentration of alcohol, have been examined. High reaction rates and yields (up to 85%) were obtained with the above microemulsion based gels.
