Abstract
The theoretical framework for describing ultrarelativistically hot and dense matter is quantum field theory at finite temperature and density. At sufficiently high temperatures and densities, asymptotic freedom should make it possible to describe even the fundamental theory of strong interactions, quantum hromodynamics (QCD),through analytical and mostly perturbative means. This article tries to cover both principal issues related to gauge freedom as well as specific problems of thermal perturbation theory in non-Abelian gauge theories.
