Abstract
The term failure is used in the framework to designate any fault that is detected during the normal operation of a component and that affects its ability to perform its allotted task. Failures occur during normal operation and have their origin in the environment around the software. A typical example is a malfunction in an external unit that causes inconsistent data to be fed to the AOCS software. Another example is a controller instability following operation outside nominal conditions due, for instance, to unusually high satellite angular velocity.
