Abstract

We intend to survey the physical properties of two families of materials exhibiting one dimensional metal-like conductivity, the conducting organic salts and the hole-doped cuprate spin ladders. The study of their transport and magnetic properties under pressure suggests that in both compounds a one dimensional confinement of the carriers due to strong intra-chain interactions takes place at high temperature while the application of a high pressure favours the deconfinement of these carriers followed by the onset of a superconducting instability at low temperature.
