Abstract
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) will provide a photometrically and astrometrically calibrated imaging survey of one-quarter of the sky in five bands to a depth of g ∼ 23 mag and a spectroscopic survey of the 106 brightest galaxies and 105 brightest quasars. This talk describes the operation of the survey, the data obtained over the year of commissioning, and some of the first science results from this data.
