Abstract
In this paper, we propose a novel robust end-to-end approach, referred to as packet permutation (PP), to deliver pre-compressed video streams over the Internet. We focus on reducing the impact caused by the bursty loss behavior of the Internet. PP is designed to be both orthogonal and complementary to traditional error control schemes, such as forward error correction (FEC) and feedback/retransmission-based schemes. With the use of PP, the probability of losing a large number of packets within each video frame can be significantly reduced. Our simulation results show that PP greatly reduces the overhead required by FEC (or feedback/retransmission-based schemes) to recover the damaged or lost data in order to achieve a predefined quality of service (QoS).
