Generation of Optimal Unit Distance Codes for Rotary Encoders through Simulated Evolution

Abstract

An evolutionary algorithm is used to generate unit distance codes for absolute rotary encoders. The target is to obtain a code suitable for disk size reduction, or for resolution increase, thus overcoming the limitations of conventional Gray codes. Obtained results show that simulated evolution can produce codes suitable for this purpose.
