Abstract
The electron—proton collider HERA at DESY in Hamburg has opened a new chapter in the exploration of deep inelastic lepton—nucleon scattering (DIS) and continues the success story of this field of particle physics, which had before paved the way for our current understanding of the interplay of the fundamental forces in the standard model (SM) and of the structure of the nucleon.
