Abstract

This chapter presents some basic ideas about photoelectron spectroscopy (PES). It addresses the fundamental question “what information is provided by a photoemission experiment?” at various levels of sophistication, in the spirit of a school. Some emphasis is given to the use of PES as a probe of strongly correlated systems, and to recent technical advances. These general ideas are illustrated by selected case studies from the recent literature, including model Fermi liquid systems, high-T c superconductors, and low-dimensional materials.
