Abstract
After a short historical outline of research in the field of geoinformation science, in this chapter the particularities of 3D/4D geoinformation systems are introduced. Furthermore, the principles of component-based GIS are presented. Finally, the essential “columns” of geoinformation systems are shown and explained with examples.
