Abstract

The interfacial behaviour of a mixture of soybean phosphatidylcholine (SbPC) and N-dodecyl β-d-maltoside (DM) was correlated with the phase behaviour of the system. The time dependence of the adsorption from the mixture at the water/hydrophobic silica interface was studied by means of ellipsometry. The adsorption of DM was reversible, as the adsorbed layer was removed by rinsing with water. The desorbable fraction from adsorbed DM—SbPC mixtures decreased as the DM—SbPC composition approached the solubility limit and close to the two-phase region no desorption occurred. This indicates that the adsorbed layer mainly consists of SbPC. Hence this approach can be used to create a pure phospholipid layer on a solid surface.
