π-Electron Magnetism

Part of the book series: Structure and Bonding ((STRUCTURE,volume 100))

Abstract

The discovery of C60 and other members of the fullerene family opened new horizons in the design and synthesis of novel materials. Particularly exciting have been the results of the synthesis of C60-based materials, which exhibit transitions to ferro- and antiferro-magnetic ground states. In this chapter, we describe structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of fullerene salts in which magnetic transitions have been reported, i.e., the TDAE-C60 ferromagnet, the (NH3)K3C60 antiferromagnet, and the AC60 and Na2AC60 (A = K, Rb, Cs) polymers. The effects of different thermal treatments, changes of the interfullerene distance, and the role of orientational order/disorder of C n-60 ions on the magnetic properties are discussed.
