Abstract1
In order to improve performance of database systems, we may have to replace an existing database machine with more powerful one. Thus database migration between two machines becomes necessary. Database migration, however, generally requires taking a database off line for a long time, which is unacceptable for numerous applications. This paper addresses a very practical and important subject: how to replace a database machine on line, i.e., how to move a database from an existing machine to a new one concurrently with users’ reading and writing of the database. A technique for this purpose is proposed.
