Zusammenfassung
Divertikel des Darms sind Ausstülpungen der Mukosa und der Submukosa durch die Ringmuskulatur des Darmes. Bei angeborenen (echten) Divertikeln stülpt sich die gesamte Darmwand aus, bei erworbenen (falschen) Divertikeln stülpt sich die Darmschleimhaut durch Lücken in der Muskelschicht. Divertikel kommen im Dünn- und Dickdarm vor, deutlich häufiger jedoch im Dickdarm, wo sie auch häufiger zu Komplikationen führen.

Divertikulose: Vorhandensein von Kolondivertikeln ohne klinische Symptome.

Divertikulitis: entzündliche Veränderungen der Divertikel mit Übergreifen der Entzündung lokal als Peridivertikulitis, fortschreitend auf angrenzende Strukturen mit konsekutiven Komplikationen.
Vor Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts war die Divertikulose des Dickdarms fast unbekannt, in den letzten Jahrzehnten wird sie jedoch insbesondere in modernen westlichen Ländern immer häufiger festgestellt. Die meisten Patienten mit Divertikulose des Dickdarmes bleiben asymptomatisch, ca. 20% erleiden jedoch Komplikationen wie Entzündung und Blutungen, die konservativ oder chirurgisch behandelt werden müssen.
