Abstract
We give a basic introduction to the physical phenomena underlying x-ray and electron spectroscopies. We review as well all the side effects, such as manybody ones, that can affect the spectra measured experimentally. Some elements of multiple-scattering theory are given to formulate a description of these techniques. Finally, in the particular case of the determination of structural parameters,a tentative methodology is outlined.
