Eine chronische HPV-Infektion mit Hochrisikosubtypen ist der wichtigste Risikofaktor für die Entstehung des Zervixkarzinoms.
Das Zervixkarzinom ist ein ideales Modell zur Früherkennung mittels Zytologiescreening.
Die radikale Hysterektomie oder die Radiotherapie des Beckens stellen den Therapiestandard im Frühstadium dar (Ib1-IIa).
Die Kombination einer Strahlentherapie mit Chemotherapie stellt die Standardbehandlung bei den fortgeschrittenen Stadien IIb-IV dar.
Rezidive treten bevorzugt im Becken auf.
