Part of the book series: Advanced Information and Knowlegde Processing ((AI&KP))

Summary.

The goal of this chapter is to give an extended motivation for the problem of information sharing and the role of information semantics in this context. We address the problem of heterogeneity and argue that explicit representations of information semantics are needed in a weakly structured environment. In order to support this claim, we give a hypothetical application example illustrating the benefits of explicit semantics.
