Abstract
It is a great honour to be invited to talk on the subject of the structure of the Galaxy on the occasion of Frank Kerr's retirement, for this is a subject to which he has made so many fundamental contributions. It is also a great pleasure. I love doing astronomy, and that I get to do it at all is in large part thanks to his having been willing to put up with me as a graduate student. The following paper is offered with respect, affection and gratitude.
