Abstract

A new integrating area detector, originally developed for diagnostic radiography, has been applied to X-ray diffraction experiments using synchrotron radiation. The system is based on a photostimulable phosphor (BaFBr:Eu2+) screen which can temporarily store an X-ray image. The stored image is read out by measuring the intensity of luminescence (λ ∼ 390 nm) stimulated by a He-Ne laser beam scanning the screen surface. The area detector (250×200 mm2) has more than 80% detective quantum efficiency for 8 ∼ 17 keV X-rays, a dynamic range of 1:105, a spatial resolution better than 0.2 mm (FWHM) in two orthogonal directions and no counting rate limitation. A high-quality diffraction pattern from a contracting muscle was obtained with a 10-s exposure. Laue diffraction patterns of cytochrome c′ and Weissenberg photographs of ω-amino acid: pyruvate aminotransferase were successfully recorded with an X-ray dose of approximately one thirtieth as much as that required by Kodak DEF-5 X-ray film. Small-angle scattering patterns from a synthetic polymer sheet during stretch were recorded in time-resolved mode.
