In contrast to the theory of excitation of atoms by charged particles, which was developed early in the history of the quantum theory, a quantum theory of capture developed slowly and a fairly comprehensive picture has emerged only recently. This review recounts the major features of charge transfer theory that are now fairly firmly established.
