Abstract
A digitised picture can be represented as a two dimensional array of Boolean values. An iterative thinning algorithm reduces each connected pattern of such a picture to a corresponding skeleton of unitary thickness ensuring that:
-
(1)
spurious branches are not present in the final skeleton;
-
(2)
the thinned pattern is approximately in the centre of the original pattern.
A new algorithm is presented which is designed to exploit the computing potential of array processors. In particular, the algorithm can be efficiently implemented on the ICL Distributed Array Processor.
