Abstract

The present status of knowledge concerning the different applications of polysaccharides in the broad field of pharmacy is discussed. Starting with some general properties of polysaccharides, which are the base for industial use, the different classical pharmaceutical systems are presented and future dosage forms, which are currently in development, are discussed.

The most frequently employed polysaccharides and their derivatives are listed in the second part, Indications about biological origin, chemical structure, and the physicochemical properties, which are the basis for pharmaceutical use, are given.

In a last chapter, the usefulness of these biopolymers as substances influencing the immune system and acting on tumor cells is reviewed.
