Abstract

In this chapter we have described a number of approaches that have could be taken to solving the problem of linking local area networks. together. The choice lies between very general gateways that must hold large amounts of routing information and also require all hosts on the network to be able to handle some part of the routing function, and less general gateways which try to preserve the characteristics of the local network and at the same time make the internetworking completely transparent to the hosts. In the immediate future there is likely to be a need for both types of gateways one dealing with essentially local requirements the other with wide area networking. It will be interesting to see if, as wide area links become faster and more reliable, one approach becomes dominant over the other.
