Switching in cdw systems and in V02 — A comparative study

Abstract

Similar phenomena observed in the past in V02 and more recently in CDW systems are reviewed. The study and understanding of these phenomena are easier in V02 because the electrical instability is accompanied by visible effects observe through an optical microscope. Low frequency oscillations observed in both media are associated in V02 with sliding metal-semiconductor domain patterns. Additional effects which bear similarities in the two media are: occurrence of longitudinal domain patterns, mechanical vibrations induced in the samples by passage of current and irreversible changes in the properties of the samples caused by high currents.
