Abstract

A discussion is presented of the observations of circumstellar envelopes around late-type giant stars. The results are treated in two broad categories. First, there are extensive surveys which provide a few basic parameters of the flows (vexp, dM/dt and/or abundance information). These indicate the importance of rapid mass-loss to stellar evolution and to the enrichment of the interstellar medium in nucleosynthetic products. Second, there are the more detailed observations of structure in the flows, giving information about the mass-loss mechanisms which may be operating, but restricted so far to only a handful of the brightest objects.
