Abstract

We have discussed some properties and limitations of the new techniques of phase-space cooling relevant in nuclear and heavy-ion physics. Many applications seem to be possible in the future. We have tried to indicate some of them. But in order to take full advantage of cooled beams, detectors and experimental techniques will have to be adapted. Phase-space cooling is already applied on a large scale in the anti-proton projects at CERN.
