Abstract

Seniority scheme is discussed by using quasi-spin formalism. This scheme is used to truncate the shell model space of spherical nuclei. Pairs with L=0 and L,=2 are used as building blocks. A subspace constructed by those pairs is called the S-D subspace. It is studied whether this subspace provides a good approximation or not. The concept of the S-D subspace is generalized to deformed nuclei.
