Abstract

So far, model peptides have been synthesized mainly by the liquid- or solid-phase technique in which tripeptides with negligible degree of racemization are coupled in a stepwise manner with polypeptides with defined chain lengths. Through cross bridging of such chains, triple helical models can be obtained containing 15–30 tripeptides which fold and unfold quickly and reversibly. This paper reviews the present state of knowledge in this area and discusses some consequences for the collagen structure based on experimental findings.
