The IV-VI narrow-gap semiconductors, PbTe, SnTe, GeTe and their alloys undergo phase transition of second order, from an rocksalt structure to an arsenic-like structure. The phase transitions and lattice instabilities of these compounds are explained in terms of a strong interband elect.ron-TO-phonon coupling. The softening of the TO-phonon mode, the carrier density dependence of the transition temperature, anomalies in the resistivity and in the energy gap associated with the phase transition, etc. are discussed from this point of view.
