Abstract

Our understanding of 'simple' nuclei near closed shells has reached a considerable degree of sophistication. Experimentally, a few difficult but very informative magnetic moment measurements remain to be done. The study of 'giant' M1 resonances and of hyperfine structure in muonic atoms may also reveal new aspects of magnetic excitations and distributions in nuclei. The theory, although at an advanced stage, would benefit from a more unified description of the various effects that are now calculated by somewhat disjointed approaches.

The study of high-spin yrast states is presently at an interesting stage. Magnetic moment measurements can probably help to answer some of the open problems. The necessary experiments are both challenging and worthwhile.
