Abstract

In the last few years high quality data for pion production in proton-proton and neutron-proton scattering have been obtained in the so-called intermediate energy range. These data are often analysed using resonance models. New experiments are being planned to study nonresonant parts of the cross section and also the effects of specific spin amplitudes. The dramatic spin dependence of the elastic nucleon-nucleon scattering may serve here as a guide. The need is felt for unified theories describing simultaneously elastic scattering and pion production.
