Abstract
One of the relatively simple systems in nuclear physics which is interesting to study in view of its richness in structure, like the presence of excited states, is the A = 4 system. In the past a great wealth of experimental information has been accumulated about it [1]. Because of the few number of particles involved one may hope that the non-relativistic quantum problem of these systems can in principle be solved. Moreover, since higher densities occur in the α particle than in the deuteron and triton we may expect to obtain more information about the nucleon-nucleon force. On the other hand, because of the presence of more than two particles additional complications may occur such as mesonic currents which give rise to effective three and four nucleon forces. However, certain attempts should be made to find out what experimental situations can be adequately described with only non-relativistic pair-wise forces. From the point of view of reaction theory the solution of the four particle problem should also be gratifying, since this specific system could be used to test reaction models and possibly to give useful guidance for improvement of existing models.
