Abstract
This talk is going to consist mostly of an experimental review of polarization effects in the three-nucleon system. There is a richness of experimental possibilities, many of which have been carried out, that arises from the complex spin structure of the system, i.e., ½ + 1 → ½ + 1 for the elastic process and ½ + 1 → ½ + ½ + ½ for the inelastic or breakup process. Most of the work in the past has been on the elastic process. The emphasis of the present talk, however, will be on the inelastic process, since this would appear to the author to be the most productive area for future work. Discussions of elastic scattering will be limited to special topics about which there has been interesting activity in the last two years or so. The greater emphasis on the breakup process is partly because “exact” calculations are becoming available and partly because available polarized beams make quite a few heretofore unstudied experiments quite feasible.
