Abstract
A system has been developed which links various mini-computers in departments of Liverpool University to the facilities of the computer centre. This paper explains why the network has been established, describes the hardware and software structure of the system and draws conclusions on its effectiveness. The network is a hierarchy of machines which differs from processor power hierarchies by emphasising shared access to peripherals, filestore and software facilities.
