Summary and Conclusions
The summary will be restricted to the two main themes which dominated this conference. The first involved the observation of intermediate structure and the understanding of its physical significance in terms of doorway states. The second involves the concept of a hierarchal classification of states which are ordered according to their complexity, that is from the simple to the more complicated. This classification is exploited in the “pre-equilibrium” theory of nuclear reactions which attempts to calculate the probability for each of these states and their probability for decay into a given channel. The two themes are closely connected by the fact that the doorway states are members of the hierarchy, the more complex states being designated as second and higher order doorway states. We shall come back to this connection in the second section of this report which is concerned with the pre-equilibrium phenomena.
