Abstract

After breaking relations with Stalin and most communist countries at the end of the 1940s and the beginning of the 1950s, Yugoslavia experienced a certain kind of democratization, which influenced the artistic and cultural scene, dominated at that time by soc-realism. Moderate modernism became the mainstream cultural framework for the young socialist state in the fifties. In 1954, the Youth Tribune was established in Novi Sad as a cultural center that strongly promoted modernist art and culture as well as free speech and dialog on contemporary social and political issues.
