Abstract

In pediatric CT examinations dose considerations have always been in the focus of interest. In the recent years several technological developments led to a significant dose reduction. Thus, using modern scanners for pediatric examinations is always beneficial. Nevertheless, specific pediatric scanning protocols provided by manufacturers should be used as a basis requiring further optimization to reflect the wide range in patient size and age. A good understanding of the technical aspects of CT, especially concerning the relationship between image quality and noise, is essential for reducing radiation exposure to as low dose as possible, without hampering diagnostic accuracy. However it should be noted that the pediatric radiologists who interpret those images are willing to accept and to interpret images with higher noise levels than one might typically see at a primarily adult-serving hospitals. Dedicated protocols with automatic exposure control may be an appropriate choice for large hospitals with various scanner models, and a large number of rotating technologists. This approach can help minimizing sources of error in protocol selection and is a good compromise when a higher degree of customization is not feasible.
