Abstract

Acute otomastoid disease is most frequently seen in the pediatric population. An appropriate therapy traditionally leads to healing. Occasionally the disease can advance to a stage of coalescent mastoiditis that can cause a breakthrough of the mastoid wall with development of a mastoid subperiostal abscess. CT is an excellent technique to investigate this coalescence with subsequent abscess formation. Many other even rarer complications of acute otomastoid disease are better studied with MRI: formation of an otogenic intracranial abscess, sigmoid and transverse sinus thrombosis, labyrinthitis, and meningitis.
