Abstract

In respect to the classification of thyroid cancer, there are different scoring systems in use which are based on multivariate analyses. However, traditional TNM classification of the American Joint Commission on Cancer (AJCC) and the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) is the most commonly and widely accepted. The AJCC/UICC TNM classification is regularly revised by a panel of thyroid cancer experts. The major alterations of the 5th edition (1997) as compared to the 6th (2002/2003) and the current 7th (2009) edition refer to microcarcinomas, tumours with extrathyroidal extension and lymph node metastases. The rationale and the impact of the changes on scientific research and clinical decision making are presented.
