Part of the book series: Medical Radiology ((Med Radiol Radiat Oncol))

Abstract

Tumors of the central nervous system account for a substantial amount of morbidity and mortality annually. Radiation therapy (RT) has played an increasingly larger role in the treatment of CNS tumors as technology has advanced and radiation delivery has become more accurate and conformal. In the modern era of radiation therapy normal structures can be delineated and avoided with extreme precision and accuracy, maximizing the delivery of RT to the tumor and minimizing the RT to normal structures. For patients with tumors not amenable to surgical resection radiotherapy often plays a definitive role in the management of these malignancies. Additionally the ability of radiotherapy to control brain tumors is increasing in the era of modern day chemotherapy which can frequently be used to increase the sensitivity of various malignancies to radiotherapy. As RT technology advances the role of RT in the management of CNS malignancies will likely continue to increase over the coming years. The future of radiation delivery in the CNS is exciting and rapidly changing. The following chapter servers as a general overview to the management and treatment of a variety of CNS tumors, and presents some exciting advances in radiation therapy that may play a larger role in the future.
