Abstract
Postoperative wound infection may occur following any surgical procedure. There has been an increase in mortality rate that has been associated with postoperative wound infection. The authors discussed incidence and risk factors, etiology and microbiology, surgery-related factors, patient-related factors, clinical symptoms, laboratory studies, radiographic images and computer tomography scan, prevention, and treatment. When infection is suspected, obtaining necessary imaging studies and laboratory tests is important for early diagnosis of infection and for monitoring response to treatment. Debridement of the wound and deeper layers (muscle fascia and bone) is the gold standard of treatment when infection sets in, as well as antibiotics, IV followed by oral.
