Abstract

The behavior of communication networks, like the Internet is complex in many ways. This complexity may have many origins, including the topology of the network, the statistical properties of the traffic, and the rules governing the operation of the devices that constitute the system. Several types of complex collective behavior have been observed in various compononents of communication networks and their models. These include self-organized criticality [1, 2], self-similar traffic [3], chaos [4], and other kinds of nonlinear phenomena (see e.g. [5]).
