Abstract.

The absorption lines in the spectrum of the afterglow of gamma-ray burst GRB 010222 indicate that its host galaxy, at z = 1.48, is an exceptionally strong damped Lyman-\(\alpha\) (DLA) system. We present arguments that the host galaxies of other long-duration, bright GRBs likely fulfill the criteria of DLA systems as well.
